Career Center Board tables tax abatement request

The Ashland County-West Holmes Career Center Board of Education voted at its regular meeting Nov. 15 to table action on a request for a tax abatement to renovate a building in Hayesville, according to a news release. Board members said they wanted more details on the project and the need for the abatement for the project at the former Kelley Hardware-Odd Fellows Hall at 7 E. Main St., which was built in 1847.

Every day Steve McQuillin relishes the high-up, sweeping countryside view from his tiny office ensconced in the tower of a 172-year-old renovated historic building in Hayesville. About seven years ago, this five-level building, the Vermillion Institute, was so dilapidated that contractors McQuillin approached about a renovation turned him down flat.

Man charged with entering car, threatening man with knife

An Ashland man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges he forced a Wooster man to take him to a gas station by threatening him with a knife to rob him. Brett Poindexter, 28, appeared in Ashland County Common Pleas Court after an indictment was filed after the most recent meeting of the Ashland County Grand Jury.
